What Happens During a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

To gain a clear understanding of your main concerns, the optometrist will take a case history that includes:

  • A detailed history of your previous glasses and contact lens use
  • A discussion of any ocular discomfort you may be experiencing, previous eye diagnoses, injuries, surgeries, etc.
  • A review of your general health and family history

The optometrist will then start collecting data for your exam record. Depending on your situation, this may include measurements of your:

  • Visual acuity
  • Glasses prescription
  • Eye movements and alignment
  • Pupil reflexes
  • Depth perception
  • Color vision
  • Field of view

When it’s time to examine the health of your eyes, the optometrists will:

  • Measure your eye pressure
  • Examine your eye lids & lashes
  • Examine the surface of your eye
  • Examine the inside of your eye
  • Examine the back of your eye

*This may involve dilating eye drops being administered to expand the pupil.

What is the Doctor Looking For?

During your case history:

  • What aspects of your vision you are having difficulty with
  • What aspects of your eye health are of concern to you
  • What risk factors you have for various eye problems
  • How to best address your main concerns

During the eye movements and alignment testing:

  • Problematic eye turns or eye deviations that can point to muscular or neurological problems

During prescription testing:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism
  • Presbyopia – the need for reading glasses, progressives, bifocals, etc.
  • Eligibility for myopia control, contact lenses, laser vision correction, etc.

During eye health test, the optometrist will be looking for signs of:

  • Eyelid and lash problems
  • Dry eyes
  • Eye infections, inflammation & allergies
  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular degeneration
  • Signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.
  • Eye cancer
